Some Major Ways That You Can Destroy Your Leadership Skills

By: Darren Williger

Functional leadership like any structure that has been well built, takes a fair amount of vision as well as time and effort in order to have a strong foundation which will cope with the travails and problems that are part of the journey to success. A leader is a visionary and he requires the abilities of his followers in order to assist him in reaching any goals that he may have set. When his followers fail to pursue the goal, then disaster is at hand. A leader must keep on maintaining and promoting his influence while he keeps inspiring people. It is really a balancing act that requires your skill and attention.

Some areas that you should pay particular attention to are listed here

  • Appearances must be kept at all costs – You should realize that any amount of indecisiveness or weakness shown will lead to the presence of people who are ready to bring you down.

  • Forcing obedience – Doing this will easily lead to dissent and will result in minimal performance.

  • One thing that quickly destroys leadership is the loss of trust. Trust is the foundation from which all leadership is built. If the people you count on to accomplish goals lose their trust in you, you will easily fail in your vision to succeed.

  • Poor Communication – People who communicate properly get the respect that they are after. People have a need to understand what exactly it is that you expect of them. Failure to communicate your expectations to these people will always lead in failure to reach your desired results and goals.

  • The big picture must always be clear in order to inspire the needed motivation. People have a strong need to know their future direction and where they’re headed. Sharing your visions and goals so everybody understands where they’re headed precisely. You should share the vision and goals so that everyone understands completely. Failure to execute will often lead to failure to reach the required results.

  • Poor people skills – You should also understand the importance of listening, communicating, showing respect and showing sincerity as well. These are essential people skills that cannot be taken for granted at any time.

  • Loss of respect – Respect is a two-fold thing, which means it goes both ways. With respect you get integrity and a whole lot more at the same time.

  • Too close a familiarity with the group. A leader has to maintain an appropriate and professional distance from fellow group members or else face the consequences of excessive familiarity with subordinates.

  • Abuse of power - Power and influence aren’t the same thing, while power is forceful, coercive or intimidating, influence is subtle and unlike power it cannot be easily abused.

  • Trying to manage people. People aren’t meant for managing. Things can be managed but people have to be led and you have to provide the needed leadership.

  • Failure to form and care for a relationship – Leadership is about the creation of relationships and your influence in these relationships. In order to become an influential leader you must develop relationships.
